What is VESA DPMS? ===================== DPMS stands for 'Display Power Management Signaling' and is a standard laid down by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) to define the hardware signaling of power management states for use with video devices, such as monitors. DPMS is a part of the new swedish TCO 92 standard, which can be regarded as an extension of the internationally reknown MPR II standard. The four DPMS states that have been defined are: 'ON', 'STAND-BY', 'SUSPEND' and 'OFF' (whereby the STAND-BY state is not mandatory for DPMS compliancy). 2. What do the four different DPMS states mean? =============================================== (a) ON: Display is in full operation. There is no power saving. (b) STAND-BY: State of minimal power reduction with the shortest recovery time (optional DPMS state). (c) SUSPEND: Substantial power management state. The display can have a longer recovery time than from the STAND-BY state. (d) OFF: The display is consuming the lowest level of power and is non-operational. Power saving is maximized. 3. What is SPEAenergy? ====================== SPEAenergy is SPEA Software AG's software realization of the VESA DPMS standard running under windows 3.1x. Using a simple Windows dialogue box it is possible to define various 'time-out' settings for the transition to the various DPMS states, relative to a screensaver time setting. SPEA has added screensaver and password controls for optional use. 4. What requirements exist for SPEAenergy? ========================================== To use DPMS and SPEAenergy fully you require a modern, DPMS-compatible monitor, such as the SPEA 2185 MS and a SPEA V7 graphics board. 5. Which SPEA V7 graphic boards support SPEAenergy? =================================================== The following table shows you which SPEA V7 hardware supports the DPMS states, and to which extent: (obviously, all support 'ON') Board: STAND-BY: SUSPEND: OFF: SPEA V7-VEGA X X SPEA V7-VEGA PLUS X X X SPEA V7-VEGA PRO X X X SPEA V7-MIRAGE X X SPEA V7-MIRAGE P-64 X X X SPEA V7-MERCURY ISA/VL X X SPEA V7-MERCURY PCI X X X SPEA V7-MERCURY PRO X X SPEA V7-MERCURY P-64 X X X SPEA V7-STORM PRO X X X SPEA SHOWTIME PLUS X X Note: Boards which do not support the STAND-BY state do not permit the user to make a STAND-BY time-out setting (the area is greyed-out). the SUSPEND and OFF modes require a modern, DPMS-compatible monitor. 6. How do I install SPEAenergy? How to update it? ================================================= - Start Windows. - When updateing: If you have already installed a further version of SEAenergy please make sure that SPEAenergy has been closed and that it's not active during the update process! - Start from Main Window the File Manager with double click its icon. - Select drive A: or B: where files of SPEAenergy are located. - Start 'SPENERGY.EXE' with double click the file name. - The program is installing itself to your harddisk and puts an icon into your SPEA V7 group or - when updateing - overwrites the older files. The SPEAenergy menu comes up and you can change the DPMS settings. - Activate DPMS settings and confirm your choices by pushing the OK-button. SPEAenergy is active now. 7. Using SPEAenergy =================== SPEAenergy is fairly self-explanatory. If you still need help, call the online help for detailled instructions.
